1. The Vice President of India, Hamid Ansari released a book entitled Healing Memories: Civilizations in Dialogue on 24 June 2013. The book is edited by Zeenat Shaukat Ali. Wisdom Foundation brought out the book.

2. Coffee table book on Freedom Fighters’ Descendants launched in Mumbai by former Bombay High Court chief justice CS Dharmadhikari.
The book titled,1857-1947: Forgotten Heroes and Martyrs of India’s Freedom Movement’, is written by journalist Shivnath Jha.

3. Scientists of University of Alaska Museum discovered a new species of burying beetle from the Solomon Islands archipelago.The new species is named Nicrophorus efferens.

4. Connaught Place, the marketplace located in Delhi has been ranked fifth in the list of world’s most expensive office market due to its strong demandamid limited supply as per the CBRE report.

5. Union Minister for Culture Chandresh Kumari Katoch inaugurated a special exhibition titled Jamini Roy (1887 – 1972): Journey to the Roots on 24 June 2013. The special exhibition is meant to celebrate the 125th Birth Anniversary of Jamini Roy who was an eminent artist.

6. Legal Activist and the youngest daughter of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Amrit Singh received the India abroad publisher’s special award for excellence 2012 for her report Globalizing Torture: CIA Secret Torture and Extraordinary Rendition released in February 2013.

7. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on 21 June 2013 decided to extend the Restructured Accelerated Power Development and Reforms Programme (R-APDR) for the 12th Five-Year Plan period in order to strengthen the distribution sector.

13.To safeguard the interest of public shareholders, the Securities and Exchange Board of India’s (SEBI) has approved making it mandatory for the companies to buyback at least 50% of their repurchase offers. Also, the companies would have to complete their buyback offers within six months, from current timeline of 12 months.
In another major decision, the SEBI board also approved measures for making transparent the share allotment to certain investors on preferential basis andsaid that the payments for such issuances would need to be madefrom the own bank accounts of such entities.

14.The SEBI board also approved merging different classes of investors such as FIIs, their Sub Accounts and Qualified ForeignInvestors (QFIs) into a new category, Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs), to come up with a simplified and uniform set of entry norms for foreign investors. The decisions were taken based on the outcome of areport of the ‘Committee on Rationalisation of Investment Routes and Monitoring of ForeignPortfolio Investments’ under the Chairmanship of former Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrasekhar. SEBI has also approved doing away with the current practice of FIIs and their sub-accounts requiring a prior direct registration of the regulator to operate in Indian markets. Instead, SEBI would adopt a risk-based KYC (Know Your Client) approach in dealing with the overseas investors. All these measures have taken to attract more foreign cash flow in order to tackle rising current account deficit and depreciating Indian Rupee.

15.Satyam Computer Services is now history as its merger with Tech Mahindra has been completed. It has also submittedcertified copies of the Andhra Pradesh High Court’s order allowing the amalgamation to the Registrar of Companies which officially completed the merger process. Post-merger, it has become India’s 6thlargest IT services company after TCS, Cognizant, Infosys, Wipro and HCL with $2.7 billion revenue for 2012-13 and 84,000 employees working in 46 countries.

17. The Emir of Qatar, the gas rich country in the gulf region, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, has handed over power to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. He said it was time for a new generation to takeover. Sheikh Hamad, who used Qatar’s immense gas wealth to drive its modernization, came to power in June 1995. This decision should prompt other rulers in the region to hand over power to new generation as well
