1. The Supreme Court on Thursday quashed the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test(NEET) for admission in medical colleges. The NEET is a single entrance-cum-eligibility-test for admission in all medical colleges in India.

2. Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India launched the nation-wide National Tobacco Control Campaign known as- Tears you apart. The aim of the campaign is to raise the public awareness regarding dangers of smokeless tobacco which is consumed by millions of Indians every day.

3. An Uncertain Glory: India and its Contradictions authored by Jean Dreze and Amartya Sen was released. The book includes achievements of India since independence and the successful maintenance of the world’s largest democracy.

4. Paul Hewson, popularly known as Bono, the frontman of the rockband U2 as well as the anti-poverty activist was awarded with the Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters, the highest cultural award of France on 17 July 2013 for the contribution to music.

5. Veteran Tamil lyricist Vaali passes away at the age of 82 in Chennai.

6. British Indian actor Paul Bhattacharjee, who played the role of a doctor in James Bond film 'Casino Royale', has been found dead in London. He was 53.

7. Communist leader Samar Mukherjee passes away in Kolkata.

8. Poland is keen to develop ties with Punjab and Haryana in food processing and renewable energy sectors.

9. The Indian Space Rese arch Organisation is gearing up to launch GSLV launch vehicle with home made cryogenic engine next month. The success of the mission will place India amongst three countries which have achieved this rare feat individually and generate national pride and excitement in the young minds.

10. The Union Cabinet of India gave approval to rename the Bengaluru International Airport as Kempegowda International Airport yesterday. The demand to rename the airport has been pending since a long time. Bengaluru International Airport (BIA) is the first and foremost Greenfield Airport in South India.

1. Finance ministers and central bankers from the Group of 20 leading and emerging economies (G20) are starting a two-day meeting in Moscow from today. Talks are expected to focus on ways to stop big companies shifting profits into tax havens.

2. Justice P Sathasivam has been sworn in as the 40th Chief Justice of India (CJI) by President Pranab Mukherjee on Friday, replacing Justice Altamas Kabir, who served as the CJI for over nine months.

3. Justice Altamas Kabir retired from the office of Chief Justice of India on 18 July 2013 after a short term of just nine months.He was the 39th Chief Justice of India.

4. US President Barack Obama has nominated an Indian-American Nisha Desai Biswal for the key post of Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia.

5. Santosh Lal, the member of Jharkhand Ranji Sqad and the inventor of Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s (Captain Indian Cricket Team) signature shot, Helicopter Shot died on 17 July 2013 at a hospital in New Delhi.

6. Mizoram Minister for Information and Communication Zdintluanga today said that Software Technology Park would soon be established at the Mizoram University Campus near Aizawl.

7. Sports Ministry recommends hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand's name for Bharat Ratna.

8. Former South Africa player Dave Staniforth has been appointed as goalkeeping coach and strategic analyst of the Indian senior and junior men's teams, Hockey India announced on Thursday.

9. IM Ivana Maria Furtado of Goa defeated Delhi's 12th seed Madhurima Shekhar in the National Junior U-19 Chess Championship in Lucknow.
